'Indian 1' (2025), acrylic and pencil on A1 paper
This recent series was inspired by Nilima Sheikh's 'Shamiana' scrolls (1996) which I saw at the Barbican's exhibition of Indian Art 1975-1998. I was swept away by the gorgeous, vibrant palette of pastels and earth colours, and wanted to use this as a basis for my own mixed media works. Each picture took one of the scroll's palettes as a starting point, to which I then overlaid contour figure drawings, giving me a 'matrix' from which an image gradually emerged - sometimes more abstract, at others more figurative.
