I began drawing from an early age, and some of my cartoons featured in Bob Godfrey's BBC 'Do-It Yourself Film Animation Show'. Music was also a great interest, which I went on to study at Cambridge University, followed by composition at The Royal College of Music. Subsequent studies were at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts, Canada, and in Paris on a French government scholarship. I also took classes over a number of years at Morley College: watercolour with Sarah Christian, and life drawing/painting and mixed media with Denzil Forrester.
My art is inspired by a love of line, colour, rhythm and movement. I want my work to have the same kind of immediate impact that music can: on the senses, the imagination and the emotions. Influences on my art include Dufy, Picasso, and Matisse - the latter, especially, as reflected in the work of Richard Diebenkorn and Howard Hodgkin. Although I prefer to avoid giving conceptual 'labels' to my pictures and practice, a recurring theme seems to be that of release and breaking free from constraints - the expression of untrammelled, expansive energy
I have exhibited at the Jeannie Avent Gallery, Morley Gallery, and with Brent Artists' Resource, and currently take part in regular exhibitions at the Espacio Gallery, London.
